What Causes Acne Scars
Acne scars are a result of the damage incurred during the acne lesion’s growth phase. When the pore or follicle becomes engorged with debris (oil, dead skin cells), a break will often occur in the follicle wall. After the rupture, the body attempts to heal the damaged skin, but there is often a residual scar since the body’s use of collagen fibres is not capable of restoring the same smooth and even skin appearance. The severity of the acne scarring is completely dependent on the initial size and depth of the acne lesion. Picking or squeezing any type of acne breakout will cause even more damage to the skin and produce long-lasting acne scars.
